Fun with Dog Food

in

HSUS sells vegetarian dog food as "a nutritious, environmentally friendly and ethically responsible food for our best friends."

The dog food made by HSUS, Humane Choice, that is made in Uruguay, does contain preservatives and vitamins that may be from synthetic sources, since the package does not specify the source of the vitamins.

HSUS promotes Halo and Halo supports HSUS.

I asked Halo about whether vegetarian dog food was good for dogs... Apparently, dogs are omnivores and should not be fed a vegetarian diet, unless they have a specific condition that requires a vegetarian diet. They also recommend food that is free of preservatives and synthetic chemicals.

I have seen some campaigns and recommendations that dogs should be fed a vegetarian diet, even if they do not have any meat sensitivities, and that they will get all of the nutrition they need from a vegetarian diet. Is this true? I always thought that dogs need meat.

Are there any risks to feeding strong, young, healthy, active dogs vegetarian dog food?

Hi Lauren,

Dogs (like their human counterparts!) are omnivores. This means that their digestive systems are adapted to eat BOTH meat and plant material…not either one exclusively. If a dog does not have a specific condition requiring it to eat a strictly vegetarian diet, they will reach optimal health by eating a mixed diet.

Not all dog foods are created equally. As always, I recommend a high-quality natural diet that does not use chicken meal (or other rendered meats), synthetic chemicals or preservatives as these additives may be associated with adverse reactions. Read the label to make sure there are only ingredients you would choose for yourself.

Hope that helps.

So although, HSUS and Halo have a mutual support and promotion of one another, they do not share the same dog food philosophy.

My dogs do eat meat, although I do not eat meat. I would not consider HSUS dog food as a healthy option for myself, even if the same ingredients were packaged as a food for people. Aside from being made in Uruguay, a country I know nothing about, if the food was a healthy choice, then why does it require so many vitamin and mineral supplements? A natural and healthy diet does not require massive amounts of supplements, like what are contained in "Humane" Choice dog food. The HSUS dog food is not healthy, according to Halo's standards that require animal and plant food sources and, since it is not healthy, it is not humane.
